Gum Care

Don't ignore bleeding gums

Bleeding gums, persistent bad breath and gum recession shouldn't be ignored. These may be signs of gum disease — an inflammatory condition affecting the tissues that surround and support your teeth.

At Mount Druitt Dental, we provide gum assessments, professional deep cleaning and personalised maintenance plans to help improve your gum health and protect your natural teeth.

Early gum disease (gingivitis) can often be reversed with professional care and effective brushing and cleaning between the teeth. If it progresses to periodontitis, the condition can damage the bone and tissues supporting the teeth — and without treatment, affected teeth may loosen and could eventually require removal.

Warning Signs

Signs you may have gum disease

Gum disease can develop gradually without causing significant pain. Arrange a dental assessment if you notice:

  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste
  • Gums pulling away from your teeth
  • Teeth appearing longer than before
  • Sensitivity around exposed tooth roots
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Changes in the way your teeth meet

Bleeding gums can have several causes, so a dental examination is important to determine whether gum disease is responsible.

The Cause

Plaque, tartar & your risk

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that continually forms on the teeth. If it isn't removed effectively, it can harden into calculus — commonly known as tartar.

Tartar can't be removed with a normal toothbrush and may build up above and below the gumline.

Smoking, diabetes, dry mouth and difficulty cleaning crowded teeth may also increase your risk of developing gum problems.

Treatment

Deep cleaning for gum disease

Your treatment depends on whether you have gingivitis or periodontitis and how much of your mouth is affected — it may involve a professional clean, deep cleaning below the gumline, improved home care and regular periodontal maintenance.

A deep clean (non-surgical periodontal treatment) removes plaque, tartar and bacterial deposits from around the teeth and beneath the gumline. Cleaning the root surfaces creates a healthier environment for the gums to heal and may help reduce inflammation, bleeding and bad breath. Gum disease treatment may help:

  • Remove plaque and hardened tartar
  • Reduce gum bleeding and swelling
  • Improve bad breath caused by gum bacteria
  • Make teeth and gums easier to clean
  • Reduce inflammation around affected teeth
  • Help limit further damage to tissues
  • Establish a maintenance schedule for you

Advanced or complex cases may require referral to a periodontist — a dentist with additional training in treating gum disease and the structures supporting the teeth.

What To Expect

During gum disease treatment

  1. Comprehensive gum assessment

We examine your teeth and gums and measure the periodontal pockets between them, checking for bleeding, recession, tooth movement and plaque or tartar. X-rays may assess the supporting bone and reveal bone loss not visible during a standard exam. We explain our findings, options, appointments and fees before starting.

  2. Professional deep cleaning

Plaque and tartar are carefully removed from above and below the gumline, and the tooth roots are cleaned of deposits that brushing and flossing can't reach. Treatment may be one appointment or several visits, and local anaesthetic can numb sensitive areas for comfort.

  3. Gum review & maintenance

We reassess your gum health — remeasuring pockets and checking whether bleeding, swelling and inflammation have improved. Some areas may need further treatment or closer monitoring, and patients with a history of periodontitis often need maintenance more frequently than routine patients.

Home Care

Caring for your gums at home

Professional gum disease treatment must be supported by consistent home care. Brush your teeth and gums twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and clean between your teeth every day using dental floss or interdental brushes recommended by your dentist.

Avoid smoking and vaping, as these habits can affect gum health and healing. It's also important to attend your recommended dental reviews and periodontal maintenance appointments.

FAQs

Gum disease questions, answered

Can gum disease be cured?

Early gum disease, or gingivitis, can often be reversed with professional cleaning and consistent oral hygiene. Periodontitis causes permanent damage to the supporting tissues and bone, but it can often be managed to reduce inflammation and slow further damage.

Does deep cleaning hurt?

Local anaesthetic can be used to numb the gums during deep cleaning. Some tenderness or sensitivity may occur afterwards, but this will usually settle. We will provide instructions for caring for your gums after treatment.

Will treatment stop my gums from bleeding?

Bleeding caused by gum inflammation often improves following professional treatment and better home care. The outcome will depend on the severity of the gum disease and other health or lifestyle factors.

How often will I need gum maintenance?

There is no single maintenance schedule suitable for every patient. Some people with gum disease may benefit from appointments every three or four months, while others may require a different interval.

Can receding gums grow back?

Lost gum tissue does not usually grow back by itself. Treatment can help control inflammation and reduce the risk of further recession. Selected cases may require assessment by a periodontist.

Don't wait for gum problems to become painful. Book a gum assessment or call (02) 9677 1172 if you have bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, gum recession or loose teeth — we'll assess your gum health and provide a clear, personalised plan.
